The truth is that, getting international passport in some states in Nigeria takes a longer period than some other states. It is way faster to get an international passport when you apply in Lagos than when you apply in Delta State. This can be attributed to the fact that passports are not made in Delta State.
How to Apply for International Passport in Nigeria
There are basically two ways you can apply for the Nigerian international passport.
- Online application using official website.
- Offline application- by visiting any immigration office of your choice.
How to Apply For Nigerian International Passport Offline
Be informed that offline application is more expensive than online application. While applying offline you will have to make available the following documents for submission of copies to the immigration officer,
Documents include:
- Local government or state of origin letter of identification.
- Age declaration or Birth certificate.
- Marriage certificate or marriage declaration (for female applicants only,females may also be asked to bring newspaper publication of change of name)
- Photocopies of your guarantors valid international passport and driver’s license/ national identity card.
- 2 recent passport photographs (you may have to go along with extra because of age and marriage declaration).
How to Apply for Nigerian International Passport Online
Applying offline could be a little stressful, online application is less stressful
To apply online, follow the guidelines below
- Visit the Nigeria Immigration website and click the e-Passport application form.
- Fill the Application form correctly.
- Click “I Accept full responsibility for the information provided“
- Click “PRINT” button to print filled form.
- Click ‘Submit Application’ button to view ‘Applicant details page’
- Click “Proceed to Online Payment”
- Enter your payment account details correctly.
- After payment, collect a Validation Number.
- Keep the validation number properly for future use.
- Click the ‘Print the Receipt’ button
That is the first stage of the online application; now proceed to the second stage.
With your “Validation Number” available to you, proceed to the NIS portal for confirmation of the payment made.
- Go to the “Query your Application Payment Status” and enter your Passport Application ID and Reference No.
- If a “Validation Number” field appears, enter the number from your ‘approved payment platform provider’ receipt.
- Click the “Search Record” button and you will be sent to the “Applicant’s Details” page where a date for your interview has been generated.
- You can now print a Receipt or an Acknowledgement Slip by using the buttons on this page. (You will need them for your interview).
- You will be presented with your NIS e-receipt or Acknowledgement Slip in a new window. Click on “Print” button to send a copy to the printer.
Documents Required For Online International Passport Application
Just like the offline application method, the documents required for your Online Standard Passport application are:
- Local Government letter of identification.
- Birth certificate / age declaration.
- 2 recent colour passport photographs
- Guarantor’s form sworn to before a commissioner of Oaths / Magistrate / High Court Judge
- Parents’ letter of consent for minors under 16 years
- Marriage certificate where applicable
- Police report in case of lost passport
- Submit application with supporting documents to passport office / Embassy / High commission
Important Notice:
Always print out copy of completed application form, and you are expected to take printed and signed application forms to Passport office / Embassy / High Commission. This is in other to continue the process.
It is faster to get your international passport in Nigeria using the offline method of applying, but applying online is less stressful.
If you meet an immigration officer physically, it would be easier to monitor your application process; this in turn will facilitate you getting the passport in the quickest possible time.

How to know when your passport is ready for collection
