The recent COVID-19 Pandemic shook Nigeria and the world, affecting academic activities as schools were closed down to contain the spread of the virus.

Recently, Schools have been scheduled to reopen so students can continue their academic session.

KATSINA State Government yesterday announced the reopening of all classes of schools from pre-primary, primary, to secondary on October 5.

Commissioner for Education, Dr Lawal Charanci told reporters that the resumption is to conclude their second term academic activities before beginning the third.

“They will resume the second term session with revision and lessons on Monday 5th October to Friday 16th October 2020, while examinations date are between October 19th to 23rd October 2020.’’

“Third term session shall also commence on the 26th of October, to 24th January, 2021. This shall last for fifteen weeks of lessons and examinations.”

Charanci said that Governor Aminu Masari had ordered that both primary and secondary schools to run a shift system on resumption.

Under this arrangement, pupils in primary 1 to 3, would run the morning shift of 7.30 am to 12 noon, while those in primary 4 to 6 are to run 12 noon to 6.30 pm.

Secondary pupils in JS1 to 3 are to run in the morning, while those in senior classes are to run the afternoon shifts.

In another News, Lagos State government’s decision to rely on advice from the Federal Government as well as the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in determining when to reopen schools in the state is the right and proper thing to do.

The state’s commissioner for education, Folashade Adefisayo, said the state government was discussing with the Federal Government to arrive at a date. The two governments are however being guided by the NCDC.

Speaking while highlighting the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration’s plans for education during an online discussion tagged ‘Covinspiration Show’, to keep the public abreast of the administration’s activities in the last one year, the commissioner said the decision to reopen the schools cannot be unilateral because COVID-19 affects the entire country, and indeed the whole world.

“We are watching the behaviour of the pandemic to see what happens next and we are working with the Federal Government on the reopening of the schools in the country. This is not a decision that any state can unilaterally take on its own.

If we are certain that the children are safe, we will reopen the schools for learning to resume”, Adefisayo said. She added that “After the protocol is completed and health officials assure us that the coast is clear, we will give the schools some days to adjust their premises in accordance with the guidelines on commencement of academic activities”.

This arrangement has proven that Nigerian schools are ready to shake off the dust and continue their academic sessions.
