Prominent leaders from the Southern region of the country hoping to contest the 2023 Presidency or play crucial roles in installing the president and Vice president may have to think again, as a fresh revelation has emerged over the 2023 Presidency.

Though he is yet to formally declare his intention, it’s widely believed that the national leader of the All Progressives Congress APC and former governor of Lagos, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is eyeing the 2023 Presidency, while Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra state and the 2019 vice presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) is also a presidential hopeful, especially if the South – East region is considered by any of the two major political parties, with the zone not having tested Aso Rock Powe since the return of democracy in 1999.

As for Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state and his predecessor and arch rival, Rotimi Amaechi, who is the incumbent Minister of Transportation are both looking at the possibility of playing crucial roles in the installation of any politician from the Southern part of the country, since both politicians are important stakeholders in their various political parties.

But it has now emerged that the North might not cede power in 2023, despite the fact that the region would be completing two terms of four years when President Muhammadu Buhari concludes his tenure in 2023 and he is conventionally expected to hand over to an elected Southerner.

According to the Arewa Youths Consultative Forum, AYCF, it was revealed that the North still want to hold on to the presidency in 2023 and would not cede power to the South.

Shettima Yerima

This no hold bared information was disclosed by the President of the AYCF, Shettima Yerima, who said in an interview on Tuesday that it disgusts the whole of the North that some southern politicians are expecting the Northerners to leave power for them in 2023.

“ It’s surprising that the South wants power in 2023. How can you think we will cede power to the South in 2023? The Northern region still want the presidency. This is a fact, it’s not hidden. The south is in charge and control of the economy and they have everything, so why would they want to take away the only thing we have.

Shettima Yerima dismissed leaders in the South, saying that if the North were to release power to the rejoin, it won’t be any of the popular and well known aspirants, but it would rather consider a former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, whom he said the North trusts so much.

“What would you call that? Even if we are ceding power to the south in 2023 it won’t be to many of the people showing so much desperation at the moment. We should be considering people like Orji Uzor Kalu, the former Abia State Governor . He is someone the north trusts and the Northern elders will give him their full support. Most Nigerians don’t know that Kalu’s incarceration by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) emanated from conspiracy and betrayal from his own party, the APC,” he said.

Shettima Yerima went further to shower praises on Kalu, who is the current chief Whip of the senate, referring to him as their “long time ally, brother and friend.”
