Paris Saint-Germain has confirmed that some of their players’ contract expires at the end of June and they are not ready to offer them new contracts. This means that they will leave the club on free transfer.
PSG stars like Edinson Cavani and Thiago Silva are among the players whose contracts expire at the end of June and will be leaving the club. So therefore, at the end of June they will have to look for another club.
With this new development, Champions League will be facing a little issue based on the fact that the players will be out of contract when the Champions League resumes and they are listed in the PSG Champions League squad for this season.
According to Leonardo, The Champions League is still in sight and the idea is to have them playing with us in the competition,” Leonardo said. “But the way we can do this isn’t yet clear.”
Paris Saint Germain has qualified for the Champions League quarterfinals just before France went into lockdown because of the coronavirus pandemic. The French league was canceled under government orders but the domestic cup finals were not scrapped.
PSG has also qualified for the French Cup and League Cup finals, which could be held in early August before the Champions League resumes.
Paris Saint Germain are set to return to training on June 22.
Thomas Meunier, Layvin Kurzawa and f Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting are also among those whose contracts will expire next month and the club does not any intension of renewing their contract.
Leonardo said, “But we need to discuss the two months ahead,”
. “We will try to keep the whole squad together for the Champions League.”
Leonardo disclosed that it was very difficult to make the decision not to give new contracts to both Cavani and Silva.
According to Leonardo, “They have made history with the club. You always ask yourself if you should carry on together a bit longer or whether you should avoid that one year too many,”
He also added that they had to make a logical decision based on economic terms and with a view of the next generation.
Edinson Cavani has scored 200 goals in 301 games for PSG since joining the French side for 64 million euros ($72 million) in 2013.
But PSG signed Mauro Icardi on a 4-year permanent deal after an impressive loan spell at the club from Inter Milan which accelerated Cavani move away from the club.
While 35-year-old Silva has played more than 300 games since joining from AC Milan. He was once considered one of the best defender in the world, but his current form for the past two seasons have not been impressive.
