Recently there have been several reports of rape cases of which has become alarming and saddens the family of victims.

Some of these rape victims were killed afterwards, (Uwa and Barakat), these awful acts outrage everybody.

Nevertheless, we must fight and learn ways on how to protect ourselves from rape as we follow common safeguards.

Although there is no guarantee that there is total protection from rape, applying this advice and tips will see to it that rape is eradicated from society.

 FOR MEN

1. Listen carefully. If you feel a woman is giving you a mixed message, ask for clarification.

2. Don’t assume that when a woman says NO she really means Yes. Let her NO means NO.
3. Don’t assume that a woman that drinks heavily, dresses provocatively, or agrees to go to your room wants to have sxx.
4. Because a woman has had sex with you previously doesn’t mean she is willing to have sex with you again and that because a woman consents to kiss or other sexual intimacies means she is willing to have sexual intercourse.

5. Having sxx with a drugged, intoxicated, or passed out woman incapable of saying No, or oblivious of what is happening around her, you may be guilty of rape.

6. If you are under pressure from friends to participate in violent or criminal acts, resist and desist them.

7. If you encounter a woman in danger at a party or a male using pressuring a woman, don’t be frightened to intervene. Intervening would save the woman from the trauma of sexual assault and your friend from the ordeal of criminal prosecution.

 

FOR WOMEN

1. know your sexual intention and limits. Say No to any unwanted sexual contact.
2. Communicate your limits firmly and directly. Let your NO mean NO. Don’t give mixed messages. Be firm when speaking.
3. Don’t assume that your date already knows how you feel, or will eventually get the message without your having to tell him.
4. Be especially careful to communicate your limits and intentions clear when it comes to heavy drinking, provocative dressing, or going to man’s room as some men think doing this indicates a willingness to have sex.

6. If you feel uncomfortable about someone or place, leave the situation immediately and go to a safe place.
7. Don’t hesitate to state your feelings and get out if you are being coerced to have sxx.
8. Don’t attend large parties alone, leave with a group you know, rather than alone or with someone you don’t know very well
9. Know and believe that alcohol is the most common date rape drug therefore you should be careful when taking it.

There are date rape drugs which include Rohypnol, GHB, and Ketamine, most of which are odorless, colorless, and tastes. It is reported that about 90% of rape cases involve substances.

These tips also apply to ALL types of drinks including soda and water:

1. Watch your drink at all times
2. Cover your drink with your hand
3. If someone offers to buy you a drink, watch the drink being made and get it from the server yourself.
4. If you get up to move or use the restroom, take your drink with you
5. If you start to feel lightheaded, nauseous, dizzy or otherwise strange, seek help immediately
6. Utilize the buddy system where a friend you trust is looking out for you and you are looking out for him/her
7. Step in if you see something suspicious

REMEMBER most sexual assaults are committed by someone the victim knows and not a stranger.

So doing the following has proven to ward off a rapist:

1. Be responsible for your actions. Stay in control.
2. Don’t walk alone at night.
3. Be trained on ways to defend yourself in the case of an attack.
4. Trust your feelings. If anybody threatens you, don’t continue the friendship and report to the police.
5. Learn about rape and why people rape.
