ASUU calls off strike 2017- School Resumption date

This is great news for all tertiary institution students and education lovers all over Nigeria. The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has reached an agreement and has decided to suspend the strike which has been on for 5 weeks, pending when the government will agree to their conditions.

The strike suspension has a lot to do with the Federal Government of Nigeria as stated by the union. The FG must ensure it fulfills the promise made in the memorandum of action they both agreed on.’
The National President of ASUU, Prof. Abiodun Ogunyemi made this known to journalists after the meeting the union had with the Federal Government Negotiation team. In his own words, he said that if the FG fails to implement the agreement, the union would not fail in responding in like manner. Our entire requests have a timeline, he said.

The Federal Government Negotiation Team was led by Senator Chris Ngige and the meeting which was slated to start by four (4) pm and be for an hour ended up being for four hours. This was to ensure that an agreement was reached.
After the meeting the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige addressed journalists and he assured them that the requests of the union has been noted and they have reach a peaceful agreement.
He went further to say that the union expressed their displeasure in the way the FG has handled the issues raised. The FG has promised several times and not kept to its word, but this time would be different.
The union and the FG agreed on some of the following funding for revitalization of public universities and the issue of Earn Academic Allowances, the issue of University Staff Schools and the implementation of the judgement of the National Industrial Court, National Universities Pension Management Company and guidelines for pension matters for Professors.
