POST UME-Federal Government Lifts Ban on Post-UTME Screening by University/2017/2018

The normal screening examinations usually arranged by universities in Nigeria for admission seekers after the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) is being lifted by the Federal Government.

As at last year, the Federal Government of Nigeria gave the mandate that post-UTME should be utterly scrapped for candidates seeking for admission into tertiary institutions.
The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, said in an exclusive interview with The Guardian in Abuja yesterday that universities should resume the arrangement of post-UTME as a pre-condition to gaining admission into tertiary institutions in the country.
The minister of Education, however, insists that the university authorities should make the fees for the screening examination affordable and not to impose a very big financial stress on the parents, he said: “We are going to allow universities to conduct post-UTME if they want.
“We have asked them not to impose huge financial burden on the parents. The burden should not be more than what they can bear.” Malam Adamu Adamu, said that the Federal Government had stopped the scrapping of the screening examination to fully understand what was going on in universities, adding that: “We are now wiser.”
The minister of Education, who had expressed confidence in the examination conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), revealed that the management of JAMB had remitted N5 billion to the Federal Government treasury, which is recorded to be the highest so far in the last 40 years of the board’s existence.
He revealed that: “Since JAMB was established more than 40 years ago, the total amount it has given government was N200 million, but in one year, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede has remitted N5 billion to government”.
“So many anomalies has been corrected by the new JAMB registrar in the board. He has been able to stop all the countless things that were happening there, in just one year
